How to consume (For Children)

  • For children under the age of 3, the eucalyptus oil can either be diffused or applied up to 0.5% (very mild).
  • With cold, put 2 drops of the oil on a cotton ball or a tissue. Keep it at a safe distance from the baby to prevent congestion.
  • In case of a blocked nose, add 3 drops of oil to boiling water and place it under the baby’s crib. The steam would release the essential oil and help the infant.
  • The oil should not be present anywhere near the infant’s nose or mouth.

Side effects of Eucalyptus

  • The oil can cause irritation to the skin if not diluted with a carrier oil such as olive oil.
  • It can lead to allergic reactions if consumed in larger quantities.
  • If taken orally, conditions like abdominal pain, shortness of breath, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, or multiple organ failure might be seen.

  • Intake of 3.5 ml of undiluted oil can have fatal effects.

Precautions

While eucalyptus has exceptional medicinal value, it is preferred not to be used for treating infants. The high cineole compound present in the plant can lead to breathing problems. Also complications in the nervous system, irritability to the baby’s skin, and abdominal pain. Eucalyptus Radiata can be used for infants if prescribed by a pediatrician. A nasal aspirator or a hot water compress can be used as alternatives for infants.

For pregnant women, a lot of research suggests that it is relatively safe to consume the oil during pregnancy with appropriate precautions. The oil can help reduce congestion and inflammation in women who suffer from sinusitis. Essential oils are a great source of comfort during pregnancy. If used through a diffuser or steam setting, there are fewer risks of having a negative reaction.
