7 Must Know Home Remedies for Chalazion Treatment in Kids

Warm compression

For a warm compress, a towel, eye pad, heating pad, etc can be used. In case of towel, soak it in warm water and drain the towel keeping it warm enough and not too dry. Use this to compress the eye for around 15 minutes. This method is most effective if done 4 times a day. Warm compress will help to drain out the gland curing it faster.

Massage

Massaging the area around the chalazion can help in its drainage. Massaging must be done with clean hands. If you have nails, make sure that they don’t touch the chalazion. Only the area around it must be massaged. Once it drains, clean it properly to avoid further infection and avoid touching the eye. Stop the massaging if it is painful or if it hurts. Keep in mind that massaging is completely different from popping and squeezing the chalazion directly.

Regular cleaning

Clean the eyelid regularly everyday with a cotton swab or a clean cloth. Do not use extreme soaps and face washes. The cleaning should be done carefully and delicately and not harshly as it might irritate the chalazion or pop the chalazion. Use only warm water to soak the cloth or cotton swab. Use moderate cleansing agents to clean the eyelids like

Tear-free baby oil or shampoo

It is one of the best and safe cleansing agent as it does not irritate the eye or the chalazion. This remedy also helps in preventing chalazia in the future.

Saline solution

It is very effective not only in cleaning the eyelids, but it also helps in draining the chalazion and breaking down of the bacterial membranes if the chalazion is caused due to bacteria or viral infection.

Warm tea bag

Black tea has antibacterial properties and is very effective in reducing swelling. Hence, a warm black tea bag can be used as a warm compressor instead of a warm cloth or eye pad. Boil water and transfer it into a mug. Drop the tea bag in the mug and let it stay for about a minute. Place the tea bag on the affected eyelid when it is moderately warm enough to place on the eyelid. Wait for it to cool down a bit to a little warmth if it’s too hot, but do not place it on the eyelid when its very hot. Use a fresh tea bag and a separate tea bag for each eye if you have Chalazion on both the eyes. The infection might spread if the same tea bag us used on both the eyes.

Important Points

  • Do not squeeze or pop the Chalazion as it will create scar tissue which makes the gland re-clog again. It will also release pus which will spread the infection leading to another Chalazion in the area.
  • Pinching, scratching, etc will irritate the Chalazion.
  • Any chemicals like apple cider vinegar, epsom salts, etc should not be added with the warm compress. This might lead to severe irritation of the eyelid as it is very delicate.
  • Do not use makeup on and around the eyes.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses until the Chalazion is cured.
  • Wash hands regularly with a hand wash or a soap.

Normally, people come across Chalazion at least once in their lifetime. It is very common and it can occur at any age and at anytime. Hence, the above remedies are not only for kids, but also for adults and elderly people. Chalazion is cured by itself, but these home remedies fasten the healing process. Take precautions mentioned in the tips to avoid future infections and Chalazia.
