Ice Pack Treatment

Ice packs offer relief from tremendous pain. You can encourage your child to apply the ice pack for 12 to 20 minutes on the affected area. It will bring in some relief. However, ice packs themselves would not kill the bacteria. It will help in decreasing the swelling and discomfiture caused by the infection.

Clove Essential Oil

Clove essential oils have tremendous anti-bacterial properties. It inhibits the development of any kind of oral bacteria. And hence has been considered as a natural disinfectant.

Your little one might be repelled by the strong taste of clove. However, in that case, you can dilute the oil by pouring one or two drops in a cup of water. Then you can ask your child to rinse his/her mouth. Once a day rinsing with clove oil is enough if your child is in his/her pre-school. If your child is in his/her puberty or teen, you can increase the number of times to 2-3 times.

Garlic

Garlic is well-known for its antibacterial properties. In case of abscessed tooth it is ideal that your child chew raw garlic. However, if he/she refuses to do that you can always crush the garlic and extract the juice. Encourage your child to keep the juice in his/her mouth for a while. This will help in killing the bacteria and stop the disease from spreading further in the other parts of the body.

Saline Water

Warm saline water also has proper anti-bacterial properties. Salt is a natural disinfectant. Also warm water tends to reduce the amount of pain and suffering. It will also help in reducing the amount of swelling of the gums. Moreover, saline water is very good for your child’s gums. Rinsing with warm saline water is a better way to treat abscessed tooth and also any sort of common gum and teeth related problems.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint is present in a majority of toothpastes. It is available in some quantity even in kids’ toothpastes. However, peppermint oil is much stronger than clove essential oil. That is why you must be careful whilst making mixture for your child. (Wordwood, 2006)

That is because peppermint has good antibacterial properties. It keeps the internal portion of the mouth, hygienic and free from any forms of germs. Children have this habit of eating whatever they can get hold of. Candies to jellybeans, everything has a negative effect on the overall oral health. They cause cavities and trigger infections like abscessed tooth.

Sesame Seeds

Sesame seeds also have the property of treating the swelling of the gums. Boil some water and drop some sesame seeds in them. Keep it for a minute or two. Then take a cotton ball and dab it on the affected areas of your child’s gum and teeth. Apply it thrice daily and you will notice certain changes. It will also bring about some relief from the pain.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has tremendous anti-bacterial and pain-alleviating properties. However, the liquid is bit too strong to be given to your child. That is why you should drop a little bit of the vinegar into a cup of hot water. Then make your child rinse the water on a regular basis. It is a good remedy for all gum related problems.

But make sure that your child does not swallow the solution because the vinegar might adversely affect the digestive system of the child.

Spearmint Essential Oil

Like peppermint, spearmint oil is also much effective remedy of treating tooth and gum problems in your child. Spearmints are a bit less strong when compared to peppermints. However, that does not mean that you can apply the oil directly in your child’s mouth.

It will have a strong burning effect. That is the reason why you also need to dilute the oil with water. Lavender oil is also good carrier oil with which spearmint oil can be mixed. Spearmint oil is rich in antibacterial elements. It kills all the bacteria which cause bad breath. Especially if your child is in his/her early teen and puberty, then rinsing and gurgling with spearmint oil will definitely help the cause.

Teens and pre-teens can definitely use this solution once or twice per day. This will help them to solve all kinds of teeth and gum related problems. (Zomorodian, 2015).

Olive Oil

Olive oil contains eugenol. This is a kind of chemical which kills the bacteria. Rinsing your child’s mouth with olive oil and water solutions is actually quite a good remedy. Rinsing the mouth with olive oil solution can be regarded as more of a prevention strategy than a remedy.

Cinnamon Essential Oil

Both peppermint oil and spearmint essential oils can be a bit string for your child; especially if your child is less than 5 years old. In such cases this wonderfully flavored cinnamon essential oil can come very handy.

This is a good alternative to the stronger dental oils. It prevents any gum disease. It will reduce the possibility of oral thrush in your child. The anti-bacterial and anti-fungal property will reduce the chances of gingivitis and tooth abscess. (Wordwood, 2006)

Myrrh Essential Oil

The antiseptic property of this oil is very crucial in fighting off any sort of bacteria. Also at the same time, the warm essence of this oil will help your child to maintain a constant blood flow in the gums. This prevents any sort of gum decay. It also strengthens the gum of your child.

Most of the tooth related problem occurs due to the amount of clotted blood in the gum area. This is the main concern for many tooth decays. That is why it is important that it should be prevented at the onset.

Other Essential Oils and Precautions:

Apart from the above-mentioned oils, there are some other essential oils which you can give to your child. Like for instance, lavender oil can be quite handy. In fact if you have an infant, suffering from tooth pain, then lavender oil can be the only option. Lavender has the ability to numb down any sort of pain. This acts as a great relief for the child. You can mix lavender oil with some virgin coconut oil and rub the same on his/her gum. However, precautions should be taken that your child does not consume any of the above-mentioned oils. Oral intake of such oils can sometimes be fatal. That is why it is always important to consult physicians before introducing such oil, to your child.
