How Babies are Made: Things You Need to Know About Getting Pregnant

How does Women’s Egg Develop?

The pregnancy in women develops due to ovaries which are 2 in number present on either side of the uterus with the help of fallopian tubes.

Women are born with 1 to 2 million eggs in the ovaries. Over time these eggs are destroyed and no more eggs are produced. In the reproductive years, a woman release around 400 eggs starting from the menarche (around 12 years ago) and ending with menopause ( normally between the age of 45 and 55 ).

During the mid of menstrual cycle of 28 days, an egg reaches it’s maturity and is released from one of the ovaries and then taken up by the nearest fallopian tube. This releasing process of the eggs from ovary known as Ovulation. The egg only survives for about 24 hours so fertilization is to be done within this time period i.e. the healthy sperm needs to meet the egg in this period for the making of the new life. But if the egg does not meet the sperm then the journey of egg terminates in the uterus by either dissolving or getting absorbed by the body. In absence of pregnancy ovary eventually stops making hormones required for maintenance of pregnancy and thickens the lining of the uterus which usually sheds off during menses.

How do Men Make Sperm?

Continuous production of sperm is going on in the man’s body, unlike the woman. These sperms are made on a regular basis and it takes almost 64 to 72 days for the development of new sperm cells.

The average lifespan of sperm is a few weeks in a male body. Around 250 million sperms are released in a single ejaculation. Sperms are being produced in the testicles present in the scrotum beneath the penis which hangs outside the body in order to provide optimum temperature for the production of sperm. Storage of sperms takes place in epididymis before mixing with semen just before the ejaculation. Despite a large number of production and release of sperm during ejaculation, only one sperm fertilizes with an egg.

Does having an Orgasm Helpful in Baby-Making?

Orgasm is a pleasurable, wonderful sensation as well as an important biological function. In men, having orgasm propels sperm rich semen into the vagina up against the cervix helping them to reach the fallopian tube easily whereas in a woman’s orgasm wavelike contractions are felt which pull the sperm farther into the cervix. The important thing to be kept in mind while having sex is that the two are having a good time and frequently enough to have live sperm in the woman’s reproductive tract during ovulation.

Which Sperm go to the Egg First?

After the lovemaking scenario when the couple cuddle, there are plenty of activities going inside the woman’s body. For those millions of sperms, the quest has begun to meet the egg. This journey of sperm is not easy, it has many obstacles to see. Firstly, the acidic medium of the vagina can easily destroy the sperm. Then comes the cervical mucus which is quietly impenetrable on usual days. This is not all the ideal sperm need to survive and travel the 7-inch path from the cervix to the uterus through the fallopian tube. In case there is no egg in one of the fallopian tubes after ejaculation, sperm can live in the reproductive tract of women up to 5 days. Only a few dozen sperm can reach the egg and rest get trapped or die or even reach the wrong fallopian tube. The lucky ones each near the egg but this not the end of the quest, now they have to penetrate the egg membrane and reach before the other sperms.

The quest ends the very moment when the sperm meets the egg. There is an instantaneous change in the egg. Now egg does not allow other sperm to fertilize with it again by forming a protective shield. After fertilization, the genetic material of the sperm combines with the genetic material of the egg to create a new cell that divides rapidly and forms the embryo. This embryo travels to the rest of the fallopian tube and reaches the uterus wall to attach. If the uterus implants itself to any place other than uterus like in the fallopian tube it is known as ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is not viable.

Conclusion

The above given is the basic process described in the making of the babies. The main motto lies in the understanding of the couple and their decision together for the making of a baby.
