7 Essential Oils to Treat Ringworm in Children

Ringworm is a fungal infection that generally occurs on the skin surface in the form of red circular patches. Even though ringworm’s are not dangerous, they can be irritating enough for being itchy in nature. However, ringworms are highly contagious and can, therefore, take time to heal up. Generally, ringworm’s occur on the scalp, feet, legs, hands, and nails as sweating is higher in these areas. Also referred as ‘tinea’, the medical term used for this disease is ‘dermatophytsis.’

Essential Oils to Treat Ringworm

Essential oils have been used for long to treat different fungal diseases, like toenail fungus, jock itch, athlete’s foot, etc. Basically, essential oils not only inhibit and eliminate the infection causing germs but also revitalize the skin thus preventing future outbursts of any such infections.

Here is a list of top 7 essential oils that can be used for treatment of ringworms, not only in adults but for kids as well.

1.Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree oil is known for its profound health benefits. It contains a potent antifungal agent – Terpenoid – that works wonders against ringworm fungi. As proved by studies, tea tree oil works to inhibit fungal activities, thus leading to complete depletion within 7-8 hours of application due to the damaging effects produced on fungus cellular membranes.

However, tea tree oil is very strong and requires to be diluted with carrier oil before application. Add a teaspoonful of jojoba or sweet almond oil to eight drops of tea tree oil. Apply using a cotton pad on affected areas.

2. Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is known for its sleep inducing and stress relieving properties. Besides, it also helps treat problems like eczema, acne, psoriasis, and any other similar skin condition. This universal oil contains powerful antiseptic and antifungal properties that suppress the actions of ringworm fungus. This amazing oil not only soothes the itching and inflammation of the skin, but also infiltrates the skin, combat the ringworm infection, help the skin to heal, and restore the complexion.

To apply this oil topically, dilute it using a carrier oil like coconut, sweet almond, or jojoba oil. Add a teaspoonful of carrier oil to 8-10 drops of lavender essential oil. Rub the prepared mixture directly over the affected areas. Apply 3-4 times through the day to get quicker and effective results.

3. Oregano Oil

Oregano contains proved healing powers. It carries active antibacterial agents that fight off different kinds of microbial infections. Moreover, it also fights off fungal diseases. For topical application, dilute it suing a carrier oil of your choice. Usually, 8 drops of oregano oil are mixed with a teaspoonful of carrier oil. Store the prepared oil in a glass jar.  Apply over affected areas using a cotton ball at an interval of every five hours.

4. Thyme Oil

Thyme oil is an amazing antifungal agent that works effectively to treat ringworm. To apply Thyme oil topically over the affected areas, dilute 5 drops with a teaspoonful of carrier oil. Use a cotton ball to apply the diluted oil on affected areas and treat ringworm without any side effects.

5. Neem Oil

Extracted from Neem tree, Neem oil has been used since ages to treat skin infections and other health issues as well. To apply topically over ringworm affected areas, dilute Neem oil with a teaspoonful of jojoba oil. Store this mixture in a sealed glass jar. Shake well before every use. Apply using a cotton ball over affected areas.

6. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil contains powerful astringent properties besides being an effective antibacterial, astringent, antifungal, and antispasmodic in nature. It is also widely used as a crucial ingredient in toothpaste, cough mix as well as natural remedies for breathing problems. For the effective inhibitive actions against fungus, peppermint oil is used as a remedy for ringworm.

Dilute it with suitable carrier oil before applying to your child’s delicate skin.

7. Lemongrass Oil

Lemongrass oil contains therapeutic properties like antifungal, antibacterial, anti-malarial, and anti-inflammatory among various others. This oil inhibits the activities of ringworm fungi thus preventing it from affecting other skin areas. Besides, it is also a natural antiseptic and heals wounds quicker and faster by preventing infections. Dilute it with suitable carrier oil and apply using a cotton ball on the affected skin areas.
