1.   Clove

Clove has antiseptic and anesthetic properties. So not only it stops the throbbing pain, but also is effective against bacterial infection or tooth decay. In fact, many types of toothpaste recommended for tooth pain have cloves as a main constituent. You can use clove as a remedy for tooth pain in the following three ways:

  • Clove oil compress- If you can find clove essential oil in pharmacy, mix a few drops of it with half a teaspoon of edible oil like olive oil. After thoroughly washing your mouth, soak a bit of the oil in a cotton ball, gently press it down on the hurting tooth.
  • Ground cloves- This one is effective, if your pain is less than insufferable. Just take a pinch of the powder and sprinkle on the affected tooth.
  • Whole cloves- Take two or three whole cloves and hold it between the jaws over the painful tooth. The saliva in your mouth will soften the spice, so chew the soft, pulpy clove to release the oil.

2.   Onion

This is a remedy that even dentists recommend. You may get a stabbing toothache in the dead of the night when a visit to the dentist is simply not possible. In such cases, cut a slice of onion and put this raw slice on the affected tooth. Onions are antimicrobial so whenever you feel a bout of pain coming, bite into the onion to let the juices run and soothe your tooth.

3.   Asafoetida

This is a spice you will find in any Indian kitchen as its earthy flavour lends a deep note to many dishes. But did you know, it can also come in handy if you have a sensitive tooth. Asafoetida is rich in minerals and vitamins. If your tooth is sensitive because its protective enamel is depleting, the minerals can restore the shield and reduce sensitivity. The minerals also help in strengthening teeth, which increases the tooth’s ability to withstand decay. To get relief, make a paste of asafoetida and an edible oil and smear this paste thickly on the tooth.

5.   Garlic

Salt and pepper are good for your teeth and salt is even present in toothpaste. To use salt and pepper, take equal parts of salt and pepper and mix them together with a couple of drops of water to make a thick paste, but make sure the salt is not completely dissolved. 11.   Lemon

Lemons contain a large amount of vitamin C and citric acid, which are both very effective in reducing pain. So when tooth pain is defeating you, just cut a thin slice of lemon (or lime is better as it has more concentrated form of the vitamin and acid) and place it on the tooth. Gently squeeze it between your teeth. This releases the juices and washes the tooth in it. For better result, add a pinch of salt to the lemon wedge. 12.   Margosa twigs and leaves

This remedy has been in vogue since ancient times in India. Neem or margosa twigs and leaves are astringent and antiseptic in nature, so these can relieve tooth pain, ward off tooth decay or abscess. It even prevents yellowing of teeth. You can just chew a few leaves of margosa along with oregano and this will desensitize your teeth. You can also brush your teeth with a twig of margosa.
