The Flag Man

Indian National Flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh. Pingali Venkayya was also an agriculturist.

Historical Significance

As different flags were adopted from time to time during India’s independence, the present form of Indian national flag was adopted in its present form during a meeting of the constituent assembly held on 22nd of July 1947.

Significance of Colours

The three colors of the Indian National Flag have different representations each. Saffron represents courage and sacrifice. White represents truth, peace and purity. Green represents prosperity. The wheel represents motion or growth.

Philosophy of Indian Flag

The wheel in the middle of tricolor depicts Dharmachakra and represents motion or growth. The wheel has 24 spokes and popularly known as “Wheel of Law” in India.

Guidelines for Making Indian Flag

According to the standards of the flag code of India, the Indian flag should have a ratio of 2:3. The length should be 1.5 times that of the width. Also, all the three strips of the flag should have equal length and width running parallel to each other.

Rules for Hoisting

For private citizens, hoisting of Indian flag was restricted before 2002. It was allowed only on special occasions like independence day, republic day etc. After the flag code of India 2002, the government has ensured the unrestricted display of the national flag with honour and dignity.

The Indian Flag set a Guinness record for the largest human flag formation at Nandanam YMCA ground in Chennai, India on 7th December 2014. More than 50,000 volunteers took part in the event.

Flag on the Moon

India became the 4h country to land its flag on the moon. On 14th Novemeber 2008, Chandrayaan-1 (the unmanned lunar orbiter) ejected its moon impact probe (MIP). As the probe hurtled across the surface of the moon, the Indian tricolor was marked on all sided of the probe.

On Mount Everest

The Indian Flag was hoisted on the Mount Everest on 29th may 1952 along with the Union Jack and the Nepalese National Flag.
