Can Someone Spread the Virus without Being Sick?

  • People are thought to be most contagious (direct contact) when being the most symptomatic (the sickest)
  • Some spread might be possible before a person shows symptoms as there have been reports of this occurring with this virus

It is also possible to spread from contact with contaminated surfaces or objects – a person can get the virus by touching a surface or object having the virus on it and then touching the mouth, nose or eyes.

How easily the virus spreads – it varies from person-to-person. Some viruses are highly contagious (spread easily) like measles while other viruses do not spread as easily.

The virus seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community (community spread) in some affected geographic areas.

Wash Hands Frequently

regularly and thoroughly clean the hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash with soap and water. Washing the hands will kill viruses that may be present on hands.

Maintain Social Distancing

maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone with cough or sneeze. During coughing and sneezing the person spray small liquid droplets from the nose or mouth in which virus may be present. If being too close to the person, droplets can be inhaled by another person including the virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid Touching Eyes, Nose and Mouth

hands touch many surfaces and can pick up the virus. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to the eyes, nose or mouth and lead to enter the body and the person can become sick.

Practice Respiratory Hygiene

make sure the people around follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering the mouth and nose with bent elbow or tissue during coughing or sneezing. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately because droplets spread the virus to another person.
