Mothers with small children have probably noticed how many stories have come up in the news lately about kids being left in a car accidently. In most cases, these kids were either severely injured or did not survive, and this is a serious issue that mommies have to deal with every time they put their baby in a car.

They have to be: mindful of where their children are, whether they are being left alone and if the environment they are in is safe for them. Mothers are aware of this danger of leaving kids in a hot or cold car more than ever. They may become fearful if they leave their child in someone else’s care who will be transporting the child in their own car. In many of the cases you hear about on the news, the person who left the child in the car was not usually the person who took care of the child and transported them on a daily basis. In several cases, it was a grandparent or the parent who is not accustomed to driving the child in the vehicle.

So, what can mothers do to ensure that their child is safe? There are a few very important things to keep in mind if someone other than the child’s regular driver is attending to them. It is too easy to forget that something is different about that particular day, and people sometimes need reminding of their responsibilities when those responsibilities change.

Have a Reminder in Place

That brings us to our first point- whoever is driving the vehicle needs to be reminded that they have a kid in the back seat. If the mother is not going to drive the child that day, but someone who usually does not drive the child will be transporting them, then the mother can give them a call about the time they should have dropped off the kid to daycare, school or wherever. Even if the driver is just going out for some quick grocery shopping, a phone call can help them be mindful of the small child they have with them. Kids can fall asleep pretty quickly once they are in a vehicle, and they may not make a peep when the adult gets out of the car. The adult could forget that they even have a kid there.

The mother or other parent should make sure that whoever they leave their kid with has their cellphone on them and then give them a call whenever the child should be taken out of the car.

If you are the one driving the child and you are into used to doing so, then you should have someone call and remind you. You can also set an alarm on your phone to remind you to take the child out of the car or place a small on the on your windshield to let you know there is a child in the car.

Reduce Other Responsibilities

When someone has to take the child to school or wherever else they have to go, and they are not used to driving the child around, then they can feel overwhelmed with the new responsibility. They may not feel like they can fit everything into their day, or they may be running all their responsibilities through their mind to ensure that they don’t forget anything. While this behavior is meant to help them keep track of all they need to do, it can cause them emotional problems that could make them forget about the baby in the car.

One way to help with that is to take some of the responsibility away from the person. If they have house cleaning to do, you can hire someone to do the cleaning for them. Denise who manages Diamond Clean says “You can use professional cleaners to take some of the responsibility off their hands”. Then they can come home to a clean house and have one less thing to deal with for the day. Professional cleaners can be used to take care of household chores like dusting, vacuuming, laundry, garbage removal and window cleaning, among others.

You could also take other responsibilities from them and put them onto you, such as making meals for the day, running errands or other tasks that they would normally have to do. This can make their day a lot less stressful and ensure that they are more likely to remember that they have a kid in their car.

Use a Baby Mirror

You can purchase a small mirror that attaches onto the rearview mirror in a car. This can be found in the automotive or baby sections of most large retailers. This mirror should be positioned to allow the driver to see the baby in the back of the car. This lets them see if the baby is doing okay and gives them a constant view of the child, so they are less likely to forget them.

You may not want to rely on the mirror alone or any of these tips on their own. It’s best to do as much as you can to help the driver remember that they have a child with them, and these are some of the best ways to do that. You can do all three things at once to give the driver the best chance of remembering their responsibility to the child and ensuring that they don’t forget that there is an infant in the car.
