Rummy Card Games

Rummy is basically a card matching game which involves matching cards to form same sets or same sequences. There are a total of 52 cards involved and each player receives 13 cards. The objective of Indian rummy is to form at least two valid sequences of which one has to be a pure sequence and the rest can be arranged as corresponding sets.  Before venturing on how to play, let’s familiarise ourselves with certain terms used in rummy.

How to Play Rummy?

• Sequence – A group of three or more cards of the same suit.

For example, 6♥, 7♥ and 8♥ are three consecutive cards of the same suit ♥

• Set – A group of three or more cards of same value in different suits.

For example, 2♦2♣2♠2♥

• Wild joker – It is one of the two types of jokers selected randomly from the closed deck that can be used in place of any other card.

For example, Q♠ is the Wild Joker
2♦ 3♦ 4♠ Q♦
Q♠ has replaced 5♦ to form a sequence of 2♦ 3♦ 4♦ 5♦

• Printed jokers(PJ) – They function same as a wild joker in rummy.

For example, A♦ PJ A♠ A♥
PJ has replaced A♣ to form a set of A♦ A♣ A♠ A♥

• Pure sequence – A sequence is formed by a group of three or more cards of the same suit without the help of a joker.

For example, 6♥ 7♥ 8♥ is a pure sequence.

• Impure sequence – A sequence is formed by a group of three or more cards of the same suit with the help of a joker.

For example, 4♦ 5♦ Q♠ 7♦
Q♠ is used as a wild joker to replace 6♦ to form a sequence of 4♦ 5♦ 6♦ 7♦

Playing rummy involves picking and discarding of cards. So pick a card from closed or open deck and discard a card to the open deck. Then arrange your cards in at least two valid sequences of which one has to be a proper sequence. Once it is done, make a declaration and show your cards.

The winner is the one with the zero number of points and the loser has the points after the sum of all his cards. The points carried by As, Ks, Qs and Js of all suits is 10 points and the other cards carry the points of their respective face value.

Gin rummy

Also called as gin is a variant of rummy played by two people. Here, the cards are placed away from the sight of the opponents. The objective of this game is to form matching sets and sequences from all the cards before the opponent does. The way it is played is –

• Ten cards are dealt face down among the two players.
• The remaining cards are the stock pile. One card is taken and placed on the show and this is the discard pile.
• Sort the cards in your hands as sets and sequences. Now you can either chose to pick the card from the discard pile or pass it. Your opponent can do the same.
• Then pick a card from the stock pile. Analyse if it is important to you, if it is keep it and discard another unimportant card. At the end of each round you should have ten cards.
• The game will come to an end if there are only two cards left in the stock pile.
• You can end the game when you’ve got all matched cards by ‘knocking’ and this is what is meant by you’ve reached ‘gin’. An unmatched card is called ‘deadwood’. You will get a bonus of 25 points plus all of the points of your opponents deadwood.
• You can also end the game only if your deadwood adds up to or less than ten. If your opponents deadwood is less than yours when you were the knocker then this is called an ‘undercut’. Then in this case the difference of the deadwood points and a 25 point bonus is awarded to them.

Hearts Card Games

It is also called the ‘black lady’. It is an evasion type of game and involves trick taking.

Here, 52 cards are dealt and usually four players are involved. Each heart gives a penalty of 1 point and the queen of spades gives penalty of 13 points. The objective is to score the least points. The layer can win by both evading hearts and the queen of spades or by winning all the hearts and the queen of spades.

• The cards are dealt so that each player has 13 cards.
• On the first hand four cards are passed to the player on the left, on the second hand they are passed to the right, on the third hand to the player opposite and on the fourth hand no cards are passed.
• The first trick is led by the individual who has 2 of spades. Then it goes in clockwise direction and every individual has to play a card of that suit if possible. You should not deal a heart unless it has been dealt in the previous trick or if your hand contains nothing but hearts. This is called ‘breaking of hearts’.
• Thus your ultimate aim is to evade all hearts and the queen of spades or win them all and award 26 points to each of your opponents. The game ends when a player exceeds 100 points.

Solitaire

Solitaire is a one player game that can be played either on a computer or by dealing of cards.  The objective of the game is to create four piles of cards of each suit starting from ace to king. Here’s how it’s played –

• Build the layout by putting one card up and six cards face down. Then put one card up on the first face down card and put five cards face down. Refer to the picture for better understanding.
• Put the remaining cards in a separate pile face down. This is used when you would need more cards. Also, leave space at the top for the pile of four suits.
• Now if there are no aces move the face p cards such that the colour is different and the value is one less than the other card. For example, you can place a 5♥ or 5♦ over a 6♠
• Then turn the face down card up once you’ve moved the lower down card. Once you run out of moves to make in the face up cards go to the reserve deck.
• Unfold first three cards and try to use them. If you do not require them put them in a separate waste pile. Once you run out of reserve deck use the waste pile but do not shuffle it.
• Eventually, you have to form four pile s of each suit starting from ace to king.

Blackjack

It is also known as twenty-one and is a comparing card game. The objective of the game is to play against the dealer and beat him or her; players do not play against each other.

This is how it’s played-

• Two cards are dealt to each player. The sum of these cards is to be calculated. The value of kings, queens, jacks and aces is 10 and the value of each card of that suit is of its respective face value.
• You can draw cards but the value of your cards should not exceed 21.
• If your first two cards are the same then you can split them and draw cards for both of them at a time.

The player can win against the dealer by any of these ways –

• Get a sum of 21 from the first two cards, called as a ‘blackjack’ or a ‘natural’ without a dealer’s blackjack.
• Play until the dealer’s card total exceeds 21.
• Reach a score higher than the dealer but below 21.

UNO

 UNO is a game played by various age groups and provides endless hours of entertainment. You need at least one opponent. The more the number of individuals involved the more fun it becomes. There are a total of 108 cards consisting of four numbered colour coded suits, action cards- reverse, skip and draw 2, wild cards and wild draw four cards. The objective is to get rid of all your cards before your opponent does. It is an easy game and you will get the hang of it once you start playing.

• 7 cards are dealt face down. The rest of the cards are kept as the draw pile and one card is placed face up as the waste pile.
• Start playing and discard a card at each turn such that the discarded card is related to the card in the waste pile as a same number or same colour coded suit.
• You can use action cards, wild cards and wild draw 4 cards to slow down your opponents.
• When you are down to one card, yell out UNO or you will earn a penalty of 2 cards.

It is a fun game and any number of players can participate. The objective is to get rid of all your cards before your opponents do.

• 52 cards are dealt out to all the players.
• The person with 7♥ starts the game.
• The person next to him has to deal out either 6♥ or 8♥. You can also deal out 7 of any other suit. If you do not have any card fulfilling this criteria then it is passed to the next person.
• This way the game is carried out and the person to lose all his cards first is the winner.
